Asbestos in Schools
What is the risk and what can you do?
There have been a lot of discussions in the press recently regarding Asbestos Containing Materials being present in schools and the potential this has to harm occupants such as the teachers and pupils.
As with all non-domestic premises, schools have a duty to MANAGE Asbestos Containing Materials within their buildings to ensure that people are not put at unnecessary risk from exposure.
One of the legal requirements (Regulation 4 of the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012) is for the school to maintain an Asbestos Management Plan detailing where Asbestos Containing Materials are present, the condition and risk posed from these materials and the process that the school will follow to manage these materials.
There should also be somebody within the organisation tasked with ensuring that these processes are followed, this person is called the Duty Holder
If you are worried about Asbestos being present within a school then you should first ask the school if they have such a Management Plan in place, and if possible, ask to have sight of the plan.
